Stanford Legacy Totem Pole
The Stanford Legacy Totem Pole. Carved from a 400 year-old Cedar tree this totem pole stands forty feet tall and weighs more than 4200 pounds. As a college student I once had a professor of Art History who said that people of European decent would often collect “primitive” art as war trophies. This art would serve as a reminder of the people they had defeated in combat and thus reaffirm their feelings of superiority. But with time they began to appreciate the intrinsic artistic value of such work and that was the first step in discovering our common and shared humanity.
