Amnesty International Recruiter

“I realize that Amnesty International is a wonderful organization and that their work is vital.  But why are you personally involved in recruiting new members?  What brings you to this corner?”

“I’m an out of work school teacher.  I need to do something important, something that matters, and I enjoy this I really do.”

“What grade and subject do you teach?”

“Most recently 7th grade English.”

“What’s the greatest challenge in that?”

“Helping students understand the value of literature.”

“What is the value of literature?”

“It’s foremost the development of critical thinking skills, understanding how we can be manipulated-often to our detriment-by words, but also how we can be motivated to help others.  Good fiction fosters empathy.  It calls upon us to consider the feelings and the needs of others.  Literature helps us examine our own lives and appreciate how compassion can transform the lives of others.”
