Green Apple Books San Francisco
I stopped into Green Apple Books at 506 Clement Street, San Francisco today to buy a copy of Fire and Fury by Michael Wolfe. While there I captured this image with my ever-present iPhone. The caption added to the Dr. Seuss illustration is a perversion of something sweet and innocent and of that I don’t approve. But at the same time it reminded me of the sort of bookstore that thrilled me as a boy.
Most bookstores today are as antiseptic clean as a doctor’s office and have just about as much personality. I remember new/used bookshops located in old buildings that were just a bit seedy with overstuffed threadbare chairs and a stray cat or two lazing about. I loved places like that, they were like treasure caves. Today most all of them are long gone.
