The Ghost of Silicon Valley Past

Clearly visible from Highway 101 visitors to the Silicon Valley often point to this mega structure and ask, What in the world is that?  That’s Moffett Field’s Hangar One.   At 1,133 feet (345 m) long, 308 feet (94 m) wide and taller than a 30 story building it’s hard to miss.  The hangar was completed in 1932 to house the rigid airship USS Macon.  At nearly 800 feet the Macon was a flying aircraft carrier holding no less than 5 Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk aircraft.  In 2012 the asbestos laden siding was removed due to the health concerns.  This left the massive landmark with its current skeletal appearance.   Google holds a 60 year lease on the hangar from the current owner NASA, however its future is uncertain.  If you’re in the area and you’d like a close up look be sure to visit the Moffett Field Museum.  They have lots of really cool stuff.
